The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), is offering a credited, introductory on-line course on dual diagnosis treatment.

This workshop, which is part one of a two part series, will introduce and/or expand the clinician's knowledge of specific treatment approaches representing "Integrated Treatment" for persons suffering with emotional and addictive disorders. We will explore key factors in the recovery process including, methods for improving motivation, raising awareness levels, and focusing on skills training. Participants will advance their knowledge of effective clinical interventions with the dual diagnosed population.

Instructor:

Dr. Marc Bono is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of California. He was awarded a Doctorate in Psychology with an emphasis in Addictions Counseling from United States International University in San Diego, CA. Dr. Bono has been specializing in addiction treatment for over ten years and has a broad base of experience with the dually diagnosed population. He is a former employee of The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. He has also worked as a Clinical Psychologist and a Drug and Alcohol Program Director for The Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Currently, Dr. Bono is the Coordinator of The Dual Diagnosis Demonstration Project for Contra Costa County. This Project serves persons with severe and persistent mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse disorders. Dr. Bono is the founder and director of The Office for Dual Recovery, a private practice and training organization in Pleasant Hill, CA. Dr. Bono is also an Associate Professor at Contra Costa Community College in the Substance Abuse Certificate Program. He is a frequent lecturer on dual diagnosis.

Learning Objectives

• Learn the components of "Integrated Treatment" for persons with a dual diagnosis.
• Learn the role of assessment and case conceptualization with persons who have complex clinical presentations.
• Learn the M.A.P.  (Motivation, Awareness and Practice) Model of recovery from mental health and substance abuse disorders.
• Learn how to use a treatment philosophy that incorporates the Stages of Change and Developmental Models.
• Learn the facts about the rates of co-occurrence between mental illness and substance abuse.
• Learn what the required competencies are for the clinician serving the dually diagnosed population.
• Learn what additional challenges the dually diagnosed population poses for the professional.

• Required on-line reading (one hour per week)
• Completion of pre and post test
• Completion of weekly homework assignments (one hour per week)
• Participation in the weekly forum
• Completion of an on-line course evaluation

*Please note that there are no real time events associated with this course. Lessons will be posted on the class WWW home page on Tuesdays and responses are due the following Monday. Assignments can be accessed at the participant's convenience.

The total cost of this course is $40.00 the course payment is due by August 4, 2008.  A full refund is available up until the posting of the second lesson (August 14, 2008), after which there will be no refunds.

ACCREDITATION

This five-week course, which begins August 4, 2008, has been approved by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) for 10  educational credits. It is being provided by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, which is accredited as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider (#000151). This course meets the qualifications for 10 hours of continuing education credit for MFCC's and/or LCSW's as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (PCE#1917).  Application in process for approval for this course by the Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) for ten Category 1 continuing education for Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC's). The CCB is an IC&RC affiliate. The New York State OASAS does accept distance education CEUs provided by the Addiction Technology Transfer Network for individuals pursuing or renewing a CASAC, CPP or CPS.Certificates will be mailed within two weeks to participants in the program for its duration who submit all required materials.  Please contact your local certification board to verify reciprocity or acceptance of ATTC-NE contact hours.
