The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England, formerly
known as the
Addiction Training Center of New England (ATC-NE), was initiated
in 1993. In
response to a perceived shortage in the public sector of well-trained
addiction
treatment professionals and a U.S. Congressional mandate, the Center
for
Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) funded the establishment of eleven
Addiction
Training Centers across the United States.
Initially, the ATTC-NE's emphasis was to enhance the development
and quality of
training programs in addiction treatment. These enhancements included
curriculum development and revision in institutions of higher education,
sponsorship of workshops, conference seminars, and other continuing
education
events, the development and implementation of a comprehensive training
needs
assessment, and technological initiatives such as video-conferences,
interactive
television networks, and distance learning.
In 1996 the extended congressional budget negotiations resulted
in significant
changes in the direction of SAMHSA, CSAT and the ATTC program. As
a direct
result of these changes, the former Addiction Training Center of
New England
changed its name to the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of
New England
and was given a new focus - knowledge development, application,
implementation, and dissemination, utilizing innovative technology.
